Inspired by the theme of the Portuguese discoveries, Bartolomeu Bistro & Wine is named after the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias. Born in 1450, he was a nobleman of the Portuguese royal household. In 1488, he was the first person to sail around the southernmost tip of Africa, setting up the route from Europe to Asia. Dias is the first European to land at what is present-day South Africa.

Bartolomeu Bistro & Wine is part of Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments, a luxury historic palace located in the heart of Porto, inaugurated in February 2019 and belonging to the Torel Boutiques hotel collection.
